Start Here Before You Take Your First Drop
Methylene Blue is one of the most studied compounds in medicine — but it's not a supplement you should take without understanding the basics. The difference between therapeutic benefit and wasted money often comes down to dose, timing, and a few important drug interactions to avoid. (If you're brand new to MB, start with What Is Methylene Blue.)
This guide covers how much to take, when to take it, what to expect in your first few weeks, and how to adjust your protocol as you go.
The Most Important Safety Check First
Do not take Methylene Blue if you are currently using SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or any serotonin-affecting medications. MB has mild MAO-inhibiting properties and can contribute to serotonin syndrome when combined with these drugs. Also avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have G6PD deficiency.
What Dose Should You Take?
The research-supported range for cognitive and energy benefits is 0.5–4 mg/kg of body weight per day. With MitoClarity (0.5mg per drop):
- Week 1 (Ramp-up): 10 drops (5mg) — assess tolerance
- Week 2 onward: 20 drops (10mg) — standard cognitive support dose
- Advanced users: Up to 40 drops (20mg) — most don't need more than 20
More is not better. At higher doses, MB can shift from antioxidant to pro-oxidant. Stay in the evidence-based range.
When to Take It
- Take in the morning — 30–60 minutes after waking
- Avoid after 2pm — may interfere with sleep for some users
- With or without food — food can reduce mild nausea when starting
How to Take It
- Sublingual: Hold drops under tongue 30–60 seconds for fastest absorption
- Mixed in water or juice: Citrus juice works well and masks the mild taste
- Use a straw to minimize temporary staining of teeth and lips
The Blue Mouth and Blue Urine — Completely Normal
Methylene Blue will temporarily turn your mouth blue, and urine may appear blue-green for several hours. This is completely normal — just the dye being processed by your body. Mouth staining fades in 30–60 minutes. Urine normalizes within a few hours.
Cycling Protocol
For long-term use: 5 days on, 2 days off. Some users take a full week off every 4–6 weeks. Cycling maintains sensitivity and keeps the body's natural antioxidant systems active.
What to Expect Week by Week
Week 1
Subtle increase in mental clarity or energy. Most common: slightly clearer thinking in the afternoon, a mild sense of increased mental availability — and the inevitable blue surprise.
Week 2–3
Consistent effects emerge: reduced afternoon brain fog, more sustained focus, improved ability to transition between tasks. Some users report improved mood stability and sleep quality.
Week 4+
Benefits compound. Users report feeling "sharper overall" — a baseline improvement in cognitive function. This longer-term adaptation is consistent with MB's neuroprotective effects at the cellular level.
Tracking Your Results
Keep a simple log for your first 30 days: note dose, timing, and a brief 1–10 assessment of energy and focus. If you're not noticing benefits after 3 weeks at 20 drops, try increasing to 30 drops for a week.
